PlayConnect Playgroups - connecting South Australian families with children with autism and autism like symptoms.

South Australian families who have young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or Autism like symptoms are benefiting from their participation in PlayConnect Playgroups. So far four PlayConnect groups have been established at Mt Barker, Charles Sturt, Pt Adelaide/Enfield and Tea Tree Gully - new members welcome. Next term we are expecting new groups in the Victor Harbor/Kangaroo Island region and the Gawler/Barossa region.

Karen Merange, National Executive Officer of Playgroup Australia said that PlayConnect Playgroups were aimed at helping families with children aged 0-6 with autism and autism-like symptoms.

'It's about connecting with other families, and feeling that support from being with others.'

'The PlayConnect Playgroup in South Australia offers a way for local parents and caregivers to connect with other local families who are experiencing similar parenting journeys, which is one of the best things about playgroup.' she said.

Ms Merange said that PlayConnect Playgroups will be open to participation by children both with and without a formal ASD diagnosis.

At the playgroup, parents, caregivers and children will participate in a variety of play activities suited to the needs of children with ASD.

Families are very much involved with planning and running the PlayConnect Playgroup sessions. The playgroups will not offer early intervention therapy, but will be able to link families with the early intervention services funded under the Australian Government's 'Helping Children with Autism' package.
